Weighted Grade Calculator

Work out your class grade from category weights such as Homework 20%, Quizzes 30%, Tests 50%. Enter a percentage or points (like 44/50) for each category, see your letter grade and GPA points, then find the score you need on the final.

Categories

Leave the grade empty for a category that has no grades yet; it is left out of the current grade.

What do I need on the final?

Your current grade above counts for the rest of the course (100% minus the final's weight). Don't include the final as a category above. More options: final grade calculator.

Formula: weighted grade = (grade₁ × weight₁ + grade₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …). Example: homework 92% (20%), quizzes 85% (30%), tests 78% (50%) → 18.4 + 25.5 + 39 = 82.9%, a B.

How to calculate a weighted grade by hand

  1. Find each category's average (for example, add up your quiz points and divide by the points possible).
  2. Multiply each category average by its weight as a decimal (30% = 0.30).
  3. Add the results.
  4. If the weights you used don't add to 100% yet, divide the total by the sum of those weights.
Example: a class weighted 20 / 30 / 50
CategoryAverageWeightGrade × weight
Homework92%20%18.4
Quizzes85%30%25.5
Tests78%50%39.0
Weighted grade100%82.9% (B)

Notice that the tests average (78%) pulls the grade down more than the homework average helps, because tests carry half the weight. Raising the test average by 4 points adds 2 points to the class grade; raising homework by 4 points adds only 0.8.

When some categories aren't graded yet

Early in the term the final exam and maybe a project haven't happened. Leave those categories out (or leave the grade empty) and the calculator divides by the weight that has been graded. With homework 92% (20%) and quizzes 85% (30%) only, the current grade is (18.4 + 25.5) ÷ 0.50 = 87.8%. Most online gradebooks show the same number.

Letter grades used

Letters follow the common US scale: A 90%+, B 80%+, C 70%+, D 60%+, F below 60%. The plus/minus grade uses A 93, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83, B− 80 and so on, with 4.0-scale GPA points. Your school may use different cut-offs; see the grading scale guide. The letter is based on the exact percentage, before rounding.

Teachers grading a whole class with points and categories can use the course grade calculator. All calculations run in your browser; nothing is saved or sent.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category grade by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total of the weights. For example, with homework 92% worth 20%, quizzes 85% worth 30% and tests 78% worth 50%: 92 × 0.20 + 85 × 0.30 + 78 × 0.50 = 18.4 + 25.5 + 39 = 82.9%, which is a B (B− on a plus/minus scale).

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

If a category has no grades yet, leave it out. The calculator divides by the weights you entered, so your grade reflects only the work graded so far. For example, if homework (20%) and quizzes (30%) are graded but tests (50%) are not, your current grade is based on those 50 percentage points of weight.

What is the difference between a weighted grade and a points-based grade?

In a points-based class every point counts the same, so a 100-point test matters ten times more than a 10-point quiz. In a weighted class each category has a fixed share of the grade no matter how many points it has. Teachers list the weights in the syllabus, for example Homework 20%, Quizzes 30%, Tests 50%.

How do I enter scores as points instead of percentages?

Type the points with a slash, such as 44/50 or 178/200. The calculator turns them into a percentage for that category. You can mix formats: 92 means 92%, and 44/50 means 88%.

What grade do I need on the final to get an A?

Use the second box on this page: enter the weight of the final and the grade you want. The needed score is (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With a current grade of 85%, a final worth 25% and a target of 90%, you need (90 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 105%, so an A isn't possible, but an 80% overall only needs 65% on the final.

Is a weighted grade the same as a weighted GPA?

No. A weighted grade is one class's percentage built from category weights. A weighted GPA gives extra grade points for honors, AP or IB classes across all your classes. Use the GPA calculator for that.
