How this course grade calculator works
One test has one percentage. A whole course has dozens: homework, quizzes, tests, projects and the final. Adding them up by hand is where mistakes slip in, so this page does it for you in the two ways most teachers grade. Nothing you type leaves your browser (more on the Privacy page).
Using Total points mode
Pick this if your class keeps one running total and every assignment's points go into the same pot.
- Start with the points each assignment is worth. Once it's graded, add the points earned.
- Haven't graded it yet? Leave it on Not graded yet. It stays out of both totals instead of counting as a zero.
- Press Calculate. GradeKind adds up the earned points, divides by the possible points and shows the percent.
Example: 9 out of 10 on a quiz and 50 out of 100 on a test is 59 out of 110, or 53.64%. Averaging the two percentages (90% and 50%) would give 70%, which treats a small quiz like a big test.
Using Weighted categories mode
Pick this if your syllabus gives each category a share of the grade, like homework 20%, quizzes 30% and exams 50%. You type in each category's current average from your gradebook.
- Enter each category's weight. They have to add up to 100% before you get a result.
- Enter the current average for each category you've graded. Leave the others on Not graded yet.
- Hit Calculate. Only graded categories count, and their weights are scaled up to fill the space left by the ungraded ones.
Example (use your own syllabus weights): homework 90% worth 20%, quizzes 80% worth 30% and exams 70% worth 50% give (90×20 + 80×30 + 70×50) ÷ 100 = 77%.
Before any exams are graded, the same homework and quizzes give (90×20 + 80×30) ÷ 50 = 84%, because only half the course weight has a grade so far. When the exams come in at 75%, the grade becomes (90×20 + 80×30 + 75×50) ÷ 100 = 79.5%.

Current grade vs. final grade
If anything is still marked Not graded yet, the result is a current grade. It only covers what's been graded so far. If everything is marked Graded, you get the full calculation for what you entered. Even then, the calculator can't tell if an assignment is missing, and category averages can still change. Your school's own policy decides when a grade is final.
Common mistakes
- Taking the average of the percents rather than adding up the points. A 10-point quiz and a 100-point test don't count the same. Use Total points mode so the bigger assignment carries more weight.
- Counting ungraded work as a zero. Mark it Not graded yet so it doesn't pull the grade down before it's even been marked.
- Category weights that add up to more or less than 100%. If they total 90% or 110%, you won't get a grade. Check the syllabus and fix the numbers.
- Treating a current grade as final. It only reflects what's graded so far.
What this calculator doesn't do (yet)
It sticks to the two calculations above. It doesn't convert to GPA (the GPA Calculator does that), add honors or AP weighting, handle standards-based or rubric grading, allow extra credit above 100% on an assignment, or drop the lowest score. Frequently asked questions
How is Total points mode different from Weighted categories mode?
Total points adds up the points earned and possible across every graded assignment, like one running total. Weighted categories takes the average you already have for each category, such as homework or exams, and combines them using your syllabus weights. The weights must total 100%.
Does this calculator compute the assignments inside each weighted category?
No. You enter each category's current average from your gradebook. For a single assignment, use the Easy Grader. If your course doesn't use categories, Total points mode is simpler.
Is a course grade shown here a final grade?
Only if everything you entered is marked Graded. Otherwise it's a current grade based on what's graded so far, and it will change as more work comes in. Check your school's policy before treating any result as final.
What happens to an assignment or category marked Not graded yet?
It's left out completely. Its points and its weight aren't counted, so it doesn't act like a zero. Most schools handle ungraded work this way, but check your own school's policy if you're unsure.
Is the grading scale the same as the Easy Grader's?
Yes. Both tools use the same editable scale saved on your device, so a change you make here shows up in the Easy Grader too, and the other way round.
