How to make a color by number math worksheet
- Pick the skill. Start with a quick pick or choose from the list. It goes from addition within 10 up to 3-digit division.
- Pick a picture. Choose one of the 31 pictures, or tap "Surprise me". The picture stays hidden until kids color it.
- Print or share. Print the worksheet with its answer key, or copy the student link for coloring online.
Want a page for one skill? Try addition, subtraction, multiplication or division color by number. Each one has quick picks for that skill, like the 6s, 7s and 8s for times tables.

Skills by grade
| Grade | On the sheet | Example |
|---|---|---|
| K to 1st | Addition and subtraction within 10 | 6 + 3, 9 − 4 |
| 1st to 2nd | Within 20, and 2-digit plus or minus 1-digit | 8 + 7, 15 − 6, 43 + 5 |
| 2nd to 3rd | 2-digit addition and subtraction, with or without regrouping | 47 + 38, 72 − 29 |
| 3rd to 4th | Multiplication and division facts, with the tables you pick | 7 × 8, 56 ÷ 7 |
| 4th to 5th | 2-digit × 1-digit, 2-digit × 2-digit, 2- and 3-digit ÷ 1-digit | 47 × 6, 34 × 26, 252 ÷ 7 |
The levels follow the Common Core grade bands: adding and subtracting within 20 in 1st and 2nd grade (1.OA.C.6, 2.OA.B.2), within 100 in 2nd grade (2.NBT.B.5), all one-digit products by the end of 3rd grade (3.OA.C.7), and multi-digit multiplication and division in 4th grade (4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6).
Division sheets never have remainders, so every answer is a whole number that can go in the key.
The pictures
There are 31 pictures, all simple objects kids know:
- Fall: apple, pumpkin, fall leaf, acorn
- School: school bus, pencil, crown, 100 days, trophy
- Space: rocket, star, planet, Earth
- Food: ice cream, cupcake, strawberry, watermelon
- Nature: apple tree, tulip, cactus, sun, rainbow, mushroom
- Just for fun: heart, house, hot air balloon, sailboat, gift box, kite, lighthouse, umbrella

Each picture is a 16 by 16 grid. "Number of problems" splits it into about 35, 55 or 90 spaces. Pick "Every square" for one problem in each of the 256 squares, like a classic math mystery picture.
Some teachers call these math mystery pictures or color by code. They all work the same way: solve, find the color, color the space.
Tips for the classroom
- Check work fast. Hold a finished sheet next to the answer key. Wrong spaces jump out by color.
- Stop copying. Print versions for a class set. Each one has the problems in different spaces.
- Mix it up. "Add and subtract to 20" keeps kids reading the sign on every problem.
- Save ink. The key lists the color names, so black and white printing is fine.
- Go online. Share the student link in Google Classroom. Kids color on screen and check their own picture.
Frequently asked questions
What is a color by number math worksheet?
It's a picture split into spaces, each with a math problem. Kids solve each problem, find the answer in the color key and color the space. The finished picture shows whether the answers were right.
Which grades can use this generator?
Kindergarten to 5th grade. Pick addition or subtraction within 10 for the youngest kids, within 20 or 2-digit numbers for 1st and 2nd grade, times tables and division facts for 3rd and 4th, and 2-digit multiplication or 3-digit division for 4th and 5th.
Does it make an answer key?
Yes. Every sheet has an answer key with the picture colored in and each answer written in its space. Untick "Print answer keys" if you don't need them.
Can I make different versions so kids don't copy?
Yes, up to 30. Each version has different problems in different spaces, and you can give each version its own picture.
Can students do it on a computer or tablet?
Yes. "Copy student link" gives you a link that opens the sheet for coloring online. Kids tap a color, tap a space and check their picture when they're done.
