IB to ATAR Conversion
Turn an IB Diploma score into a notional ATAR with VTAC's official 2026/27 tables. An IB score of 40, for example, is a notional ATAR between 96.35 and 97.10 depending on your IBAS, and 96.85 in the whole-score table.
Your IB result
VTAC shows your IBAS with your notional ATAR. It is your diploma score plus .00, .25, .50 or .75.
This IBAS does not match the diploma score you picked. The IBAS result is shown.
Shows the lowest IBAS that reaches it.
Notional ATAR
How an IB score becomes an ATAR
IB Diploma results run from 24 to 45. VTAC does not convert the whole number straight away. It first works out your IB Admissions Score (IBAS), which adds decimals to your diploma score based on how you did within the grade bands of your subjects. A diploma score of 39 might become an IBAS of 39.25.
The IBAS is then turned into a notional ATAR with VTAC's 2026/27 table. VTAC calls it a national conversion because it combines student data from every Australian state, so IB students can use it to apply anywhere in Australia.
If you sat the IB outside Australia after November 2022, VTAC uses your whole-number score out of 45 instead, with its own table. Those values are in the last column below.
IB score to ATAR table (2026/27)
Each row is one IB Diploma score. The first four columns are the notional ATARs for each possible IBAS. The last column is the whole-score table for IB students outside Australia.

No diploma? The derived IB rank
Some Victorian IB students who do the full program but do not get the diploma, including those under 24, can get a derived IB rank instead. You need a combined score of 20 or more, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and at least six subjects, and no N or P grades. Institutions decide for themselves whether to accept it, so ask them directly.

|---|---|
| 30 or more | 79.30 |

Frequently asked questions
What is a 36 IB in ATAR?

What is the IBAS?
It stands for IB Admissions Score. VTAC adds decimals to your diploma score based on your average performance within each grade band of your subjects, so a 39 can become 39.00, 39.25, 39.50 or 39.75. VTAC then turns the IBAS into a notional ATAR.
Does every state use the same IB to ATAR conversion?
VTAC describes the notional ATAR as a national conversion that combines student data from all Australian states, so IB students can use it when applying in any state or territory.
What if I don't get the IB Diploma?
Some Victorian IB students can get a derived IB rank instead, if they did the full program, scored 20 or more, completed Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and six subjects, and have no N or P grades. A score of 30 or more gives 79.30 and 20 gives 54.80. Institutions choose whether to accept it.
