HSC ATAR Calculator
Add your HSC marks and get an estimated ATAR. Each mark is turned into a scaled mark using the percentiles in UAC's report on the 2025 HSC, your best 10 units are added up the way UAC does it, and the total is matched to UAC's 2025 aggregate and ATAR figures.
2026 HSC results come out at 6am and ATARs at 9am on Wednesday 16 December 2026 (Sydney time).
Your HSC marks
Pick each course and type your HSC mark. 2-unit courses are out of 100, extension courses out of 50. If you take Mathematics Extension 2, type both your Extension 1 and Extension 2 marks out of 100.
A mark is outside the range for that course.

Where a few more marks help most
How UAC works out your ATAR
- Scaling. UAC scales the marks in every course so they can be compared, based on how strong the students in each course were. In 2025 the middle HSC mark in English Advanced was 82 and the middle scaled mark was 33.7 out of 50 per unit. In English Standard they were 73 and 20.0.
- Aggregate. Your aggregate is the scaled marks in your best 2 units of English plus your best 8 units from everything else, out of 500.
- Ranking. The aggregate is turned into a rank. In 2025, 370.7 was the smallest aggregate that still earned a 90.00 ATAR.
The UAC rules this calculator applies
- The best 2 units of English come first. If your English Extension 1 or 2 scaled mark is higher than English Advanced, the extension counts as English and Advanced moves to the other 8 units.
- Part of a course can count. If only one more unit fits, one unit of a 2-unit course is used.
- Paired with Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 is worth 1 unit. Paired with Mathematics Extension 2, its mark is doubled and it is worth 2 units, and Mathematics Advanced drops out.
- An extension course needs its 2-unit course: English Extension 1 needs English Advanced, History Extension needs Ancient or Modern History, and a language extension needs the Continuers course.
- From 2025 on, courses are no longer split into Category A and B. VET exams, English Studies and Mathematics Standard 1 count like any other course.
Worked example
Say you get English Advanced 85, Mathematics Advanced 88, Chemistry 82, Physics 80, Biology 84 and Business Studies 86. Using the 2025 percentiles these scale to about 36.8, 38.3, 38.3, 35.9, 35.8 and 34.8 per unit.
English Advanced fills the 2 units of English (73.6). The best 8 other units are Chemistry, Mathematics Advanced, Physics and Biology, so Business Studies misses out even with a higher HSC mark. The aggregate is about 370.2, which is an ATAR of about 89.90. Five more marks in Biology would lift it to about 91.40, the biggest gain of any course here.

Why your real ATAR can be different
- UAC scales raw marks, not the HSC marks on your results. Two students with the same HSC mark can end up with different scaled marks, so UAC warns its percentile table is not a straight conversion.
- The report only gives five points per course (the 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 99th percentiles). Between them this calculator draws a straight line.
- Courses with fewer than 40 students have no percentiles, so their estimate uses the course average and spread instead.
- Scaling changes every year, and 2026 will not match 2025 exactly.
Treat the range under your result as the realistic answer. Only UAC can calculate your real ATAR.

We used the course percentiles and aggregate figures in the UAC Report on the Scaling of the 2025 NSW HSC (May 2026), Tables A3, A9 and 3.2. The rules are from UAC, How your ATAR is calculated, and the dates from UAC key dates and NESA HSC key dates. We checked them all on 17 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How is the HSC ATAR calculated?
UAC scales the mark for each course, then builds an aggregate out of 500 from your best 2 units of English plus your best 8 other units. That aggregate is turned into a rank. In 2025 an aggregate of 370.7 gave an ATAR of 90.00.
What aggregate do I need for a 90 ATAR?
In 2025 the lowest aggregate for 90.00 was 370.7, an average of about 37.1 scaled marks per unit. For 99.00 it was 447.8 and for 80.00 it was 313.8.
Does English Extension count as English?
Yes. UAC uses the English units with the highest scaled marks first. If English Extension 1 and 2 scale higher than English Advanced, they fill the 2 units of English, and Advanced can still count among your other 8 units.
When is Maths Extension 1 worth 2 units?
Only if you also do Mathematics Extension 2. With Mathematics Advanced it counts as 1 unit. With Extension 2, its mark is doubled to count as 2 units, and Mathematics Advanced is left out.
Can VET courses and Maths Standard 1 count for the ATAR?
Yes. UAC removed Category A and B in 2025, so VET exams, English Studies and Mathematics Standard 1 count like other courses. They usually scale lower, so they often end up outside your best 10 units.
When do 2026 ATARs come out?
At 9am on Wednesday 16 December 2026 on the UAC site. NESA puts out HSC results three hours earlier, at 6am.
