How to make an addition color by number
- Pick the level. Sums within 10 for kindergarten and early 1st grade, within 20 for 1st and 2nd grade, or 2-digit addition with or without regrouping.
- Pick a picture. Choose one of the 31 pictures or tap "Surprise me". The picture only shows up as kids color.
- Print or share. Print the sheet and its answer key, or copy the student link for coloring on a tablet or Chromebook.

Which level fits your class?
| Level | Example | Usually used in |
|---|---|---|
| Within 10 | 6 + 3 = 9 | Kindergarten and 1st grade |
| Within 20 | 8 + 7 = 15 | 1st and 2nd grade |
| 2-digit + 1-digit | 43 + 5 = 48 | 1st and 2nd grade |
| 2-digit, no regrouping | 34 + 25 = 59 | 2nd grade |
| 2-digit with regrouping | 47 + 38 = 85 | 2nd and 3rd grade |
In the Common Core standards, 1st graders add within 20 and should be fluent within 10 (1.OA.C.6). By the end of 2nd grade, kids should know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory (2.OA.B.2) and add within 100 fluently (2.NBT.B.5).
Why it works for addition facts
The same answer shows up from different facts. A space for 9 might say 4 + 5 and the next one 6 + 3, so kids have to add every time instead of copying the space next door.
Every color has one to four answers in the key. If a child adds 8 + 7 and gets 14, there's no 14 for that color, so they know to check again.
For sums within 20, it's a good time to practice making a ten: 8 + 7 is 8 + 2 + 5, which is 10 + 5.
Tips for the classroom
- Centers and early finishers. Keep a few pictures printed. The easy levels are great for the first weeks of school.
- Class sets. Print up to 30 versions. Each one has the problems in different spaces.
- Mixed practice. When kids are ready, the subtraction color by number sheets and the "Add and subtract to 20" level in the math color by number generator keep them reading the sign.
- Black and white printing. The color names are printed next to the swatches, so you don't need a color printer.

What is an addition color by number?
It's a picture split into spaces, with an addition problem in each one. Kids add, find the sum in the color key and color the space. When they finish, a hidden picture shows up.
