How to make a division color by number

- Print or share. Print the worksheet with its answer key, or share a link for coloring online.

Which level fits your class?
| Level | Example | Usually used in |
|---|---|---|
| ÷ 2, 5 and 10 | 35 ÷ 5 = 7 | 3rd grade |
| Facts to 100 ÷ 10 | 56 ÷ 7 = 8 | 3rd grade |
| Facts to 144 ÷ 12 | 132 ÷ 11 = 12 | 3rd and 4th grade |
| 2-digit ÷ 1-digit | 84 ÷ 4 = 21 | 4th grade |
| 3-digit ÷ 1-digit | 252 ÷ 7 = 36 | 4th and 5th grade |
The Common Core standards ask 3rd graders to multiply and divide within 100 fluently (3.OA.C.7), and 4th graders to find quotients with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors (4.NBT.B.6).
Every problem divides evenly. There are no remainders, so each answer is a whole number that can go in the color key.
Tips for teaching with it
- Use fact families. If kids know 7 × 8 = 56, they know 56 ÷ 7 = 8. Pair this sheet with a multiplication color by number on the same tables.
- One divisor at a time. Tick only 6 under "Divide by" for a sheet of 6s. It shows quickly who has those facts down.
- Long division practice. The 2-digit and 3-digit levels give kids a reason to finish each problem, and the key tells them right away if an answer is off.
- Class sets. Print up to 30 versions with the answer keys labeled by version.
Frequently asked questions
What is a division color by number?
It's a picture split into spaces with a division problem in each. Kids divide, find the answer in the color key and color the space. A hidden picture shows up when they finish.
Do the problems have remainders?
No. Every problem divides evenly, so all the answers are whole numbers.
Which grades is it for?
Division facts fit 3rd and 4th grade. The 2-digit and 3-digit levels fit 4th and 5th grade.
Can every student get their own version?
Yes, up to 30 versions. Each one puts different problems in different spaces, and the answer keys are labeled by version.
Can kids color it online?
Yes. Click "Copy student link" or "Share to Google Classroom". Kids tap a color, then a space, and check their picture at the end.
