Letter-grade cutoffs out of 25
- A (90% and above): 22.5–25 points — 23 or more in whole points
- B (80% to below 90%): 20 to below 22.5
- C (70% to below 80%): 17.5 to below 20
- D (60% to below 70%): 15 to below 17.5
- F (below 60%): below 15

How to calculate a grade out of 25
Divide the points earned by 25, then multiply by 100. For example, 24 out of 25 is 24 ÷ 25 × 100 = 96%, and 21 out of 25 is 84%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 25 questions is only an "out of 25" test when every question is worth the same amount.

Each point is worth 100 ÷ 25 = 4% of the grade. Missing one point gives 96%.
What is 21 out of 25 as a percentage?
21 ÷ 25 × 100 = 84%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 25 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 22.5 out of 25. If you only award whole points, that means 23 or more, so a student can miss up to 2 points.
What is a passing score out of 25?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 15 out of 25. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
