Letter-grade cutoffs out of 10
- A (90% and above): 9–10 points
- B (80% to below 90%): 8 to below 9
- C (70% to below 80%): 7 to below 8
- D (60% to below 70%): 6 to below 7
- F (below 60%): below 6

How to calculate a grade out of 10
Divide the points earned by 10, then multiply by 100. For example, 9 out of 10 is 9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 90%, and 8 out of 10 is 80%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 10 questions is only an "out of 10" test when every question is worth the same amount.
Frequently asked questions
How much is each point worth on a test out of 10?
Each point is worth 100 ÷ 10 = 10% of the grade. Missing one point gives 90%.
What is 8 out of 10 as a percentage?
8 ÷ 10 × 100 = 80%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 10 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 9 out of 10. If you only award whole points, that means 9 or more, so a student can miss up to 1 point.
What is a passing score out of 10?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 6 out of 10. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
