Letter-grade cutoffs out of 100
- A (90% and above): 90–100 points
- B (80% to below 90%): 80 to below 90
- C (70% to below 80%): 70 to below 80
- D (60% to below 70%): 60 to below 70
- F (below 60%): below 60

How to calculate a grade out of 100
Divide the points earned by 100, then multiply by 100. For example, 99 out of 100 is 99 ÷ 100 × 100 = 99%, and 85 out of 100 is 85%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 100 questions is only an "out of 100" test when every question is worth the same amount.
Frequently asked questions
How much is each point worth on a test out of 100?
Each point is worth 100 ÷ 100 = 1% of the grade. Missing one point gives 99%.
What is 85 out of 100 as a percentage?
85 ÷ 100 × 100 = 85%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 100 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 90 out of 100. If you only award whole points, that means 90 or more, so a student can miss up to 10 points.
What is a passing score out of 100?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 60 out of 100. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
