Letter-grade cutoffs out of 20
- A (90% and above): 18–20 points
- B (80% to below 90%): 16 to below 18
- C (70% to below 80%): 14 to below 16
- D (60% to below 70%): 12 to below 14
- F (below 60%): below 12

How to calculate a grade out of 20
Divide the points earned by 20, then multiply by 100. For example, 19 out of 20 is 19 ÷ 20 × 100 = 95%, and 17 out of 20 is 85%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 20 questions is only an "out of 20" test when every question is worth the same amount.

How much is each point worth on a test out of 20?
Each point is worth 100 ÷ 20 = 5% of the grade. Missing one point gives 95%.
What is 17 out of 20 as a percentage?
17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 20 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 18 out of 20. If you only award whole points, that means 18 or more, so a student can miss up to 2 points.
What is a passing score out of 20?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 12 out of 20. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
