Letter-grade cutoffs out of 50
- A (90% and above): 45–50 points
- B (80% to below 90%): 40 to below 45
- C (70% to below 80%): 35 to below 40
- D (60% to below 70%): 30 to below 35
- F (below 60%): below 30

How to calculate a grade out of 50
Divide the points earned by 50, then multiply by 100. For example, 49 out of 50 is 49 ÷ 50 × 100 = 98%, and 42 out of 50 is 84%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 50 questions is only an "out of 50" test when every question is worth the same amount.

How much is each point worth on a test out of 50?
Each point is worth 100 ÷ 50 = 2% of the grade. Missing one point gives 98%.
What is 42 out of 50 as a percentage?
42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 50 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 45 out of 50. If you only award whole points, that means 45 or more, so a student can miss up to 5 points.
What is a passing score out of 50?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 30 out of 50. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
