Letter-grade cutoffs out of 30
- A (90% and above): 27–30 points
- B (80% to below 90%): 24 to below 27
- C (70% to below 80%): 21 to below 24
- D (60% to below 70%): 18 to below 21
- F (below 60%): below 18

How to calculate a grade out of 30
Divide the points earned by 30, then multiply by 100. For example, 29 out of 30 is 29 ÷ 30 × 100 = 96.67%, and 26 out of 30 is 86.67%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 30 questions is only an "out of 30" test when every question is worth the same amount.

How much is each point worth on a test out of 30?
Each point is worth 100 ÷ 30 = 3.33% of the grade. Missing one point gives 96.67%.
What is 26 out of 30 as a percentage?
26 ÷ 30 × 100 = 86.67%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 30 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 27 out of 30. If you only award whole points, that means 27 or more, so a student can miss up to 3 points.
What is a passing score out of 30?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 18 out of 30. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
