Letter-grade cutoffs out of 40
- A (90% and above): 36–40 points
- B (80% to below 90%): 32 to below 36
- C (70% to below 80%): 28 to below 32
- D (60% to below 70%): 24 to below 28
- F (below 60%): below 24

How to calculate a grade out of 40
Divide the points earned by 40, then multiply by 100. For example, 39 out of 40 is 39 ÷ 40 × 100 = 97.5%, and 34 out of 40 is 85%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 40 questions is only an "out of 40" test when every question is worth the same amount.

How much is each point worth on a test out of 40?
Each point is worth 100 ÷ 40 = 2.5% of the grade. Missing one point gives 97.5%.
What is 34 out of 40 as a percentage?
34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 40 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 36 out of 40. If you only award whole points, that means 36 or more, so a student can miss up to 4 points.
What is a passing score out of 40?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 24 out of 40. Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
