Letter-grade cutoffs out of 12
- A (90% and above): 10.8–12 points — 11 or more in whole points
- B (80% to below 90%): 9.6 to below 10.8
- C (70% to below 80%): 8.4 to below 9.6
- D (60% to below 70%): 7.2 to below 8.4
- F (below 60%): below 7.2

How to calculate a grade out of 12
Divide the points earned by 12, then multiply by 100. For example, 11 out of 12 is 11 ÷ 12 × 100 = 91.67%, and 10 out of 12 is 83.33%. Percentages in the chart are rounded to two decimals, but the letter grade is based on the exact value.
If the test has questions with different point values, add up the possible points first. A test with 12 questions is only an "out of 12" test when every question is worth the same amount.

Each point is worth 100 ÷ 12 = 8.33% of the grade. Missing one point gives 91.67%.
What is 10 out of 12 as a percentage?
10 ÷ 12 × 100 = 83.33%, which is a B on the example A/B/C/D/F scale (A = 90%+, B = 80%+, C = 70%+, D = 60%+).
How many can you miss out of 12 and still get an A?
With a 90% A cutoff you need at least 10.8 out of 12. If you only award whole points, that means 11 or more, so a student can miss up to 1 point.
What is a passing score out of 12?
If passing is 60%, the minimum passing score is 7.2 out of 12 (8 in whole points). Many schools use a different passing percentage, so check your own policy.
